Poetic Narrative Videos
Distant Shadows, 2013, video, 10 mins 45 secs.
“God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December." --James M. Barrie Time moves to the future while memory moves to the past. Distant Shadows recalls memories of the Vietnam War (known by the Vietnamese as the American War) to remember and honor those who sacrificed their lives in that conflict. |

Introflexions, 2013, video, 18mins 25 secs. An invitation to visit a spiritual world is sent out by a waving incense smoke. In this world, a lonely female figure, wanders through the dreams and the memories of her childhood during the American War in Vietnam. It was the time of coexistence between innocence and horror, heroism and cruelty, life and death, and hope and despair. It is an attempt to share with the viewer an experience that an individual, a society and its people have endured. It explores the complex relationship between time, space, history, memory, and trauma in the form of a poetic narrative video installation. |
Introspection, video, 2013, 4 mins, 08 secs Introspection is rooted in my dreams, where my mind deals with all the information, memories, neuroses, fears and emotions archived during my life. The work is a call for calm reflection and deliberation. The work questions our perception of reality and whether our actions sometimes take their stimulus from a primordial unconscious rather than from waking consciousness. On a more personal level, I weave new material into my memory system and dreams in a way that both reduces emotional arousal and is adaptive in helping me cope with further trauma or stressful events. |

Fate Makes Roses Fragile, 2012, video, 2 minutes 29 secs The inspiration for this body of work is Vietnam’s epic national poem, The Tale of Kieu, written in eighteenth century by Nguyen Du. This work is a metaphor for the historical victimization of the Vietnamese people and their (sometimes) adaptive response. It also speaks to the fate and vulnerability of human beings trapped within a feudal system. |
The Tale of Bottle Gourd, 2012, video, 2 mins, 42 secs According to Vietnamese mythology, bottle gourd ("hồ lô")is popular as luck, happiness, prosperity, and a charm to ward off evil spirits and diseases. This video engages the hope and fear of Vietnamese people who have lived through the terror of 100 years of colonial rule and their desire to make a better future. |

Breakthrough, 2012, video, 2mins 37 secs As long as there are still people who struggle for life and dignity, there will be discourse over human rights. Many people flee their native lands for want of freedom, both political and economic. Bearing the sorrow of rootlessness and the frustration and humiliation of discrimination in a foreign land, these refugees’ hearts and minds are charged with a longing for their homeland. Their hope to break the system that turned their lives into misfortune and to be able to return to the home they once knew never dies. |
Experimental Videos
Fluid Time, 2011, video, 2 mins 16 secs I want to investigate the concepts of fluidity and time. Film can capture time and re-order it, and because time moves, it has a fluid aspect. I want to capture the esthetics of both time and motion and how they work together and are related. |
